One of the most important things when it comes to training in chess is that you always have a goal. And for our academy, the focus is always on the next big competition and ways for players to improve. We always like involving our players in great competitions, and we recently attended the American Open 2025 and the Superstates 2025. It was extremely important for us to be a part of these tournaments. Not only is a great way to support chess, but it also encourages our players to push the boundaries and become the best players they can be.
Our presence at the Superstates 2025 championship was focused on having our players demonstrate heart, poise and adequate preparation. Our players battled through the time positions, emotional swings and time pressure. The sidelines, but also our results spoke for ourselves. Our players ranked 1st in K3 U-300 and K-12 Open Section, and we also earned multiple 2nd and 3rd places as well. It was an incredible opportunity, and we enjoy the fact that our players were very committed to win.
We decided to go to the American Open 2025 with our players as well. We had a representation of over 20 players repping out our blue colors. And we had multiple players who secured top 10 finishes in order to earn individual trophies. We also had team success, and we are honored to bring 3 team trophies to the academy. Going to the American Open was a great experience, and our players had a huge amount of fun attending this event. It was exciting, but also challenging, and it showed how much dedication we all have towards these amazing competitions.
Another event that we attended recently was the SCCF SoCal Inter-Club State Championship. Here we showed up with 3 teams, and we battled very hard with the opposing teams. It was our pleasure and we were very excited to compete at the inter-club levels. We are very honored to participate in such events, and we are also proud of every player who came with us and represented our organization. As always, we are looking forward to the next event, and we want to share our appreciation to the Southern California Chess Federation and the San Diego Chess Club for creating this event.
When we attend any chess-related event that has a tournament, our focus is to try and help players enjoy the competitive field and have a great time. However, being an individual player is quite different to the regular team competition. And there are different aspects to keep in mind here.
We always lose and win as a team. Working as a team allows you to focus on and keep the emotions under control. There can be missed tactics, tough pairings, time scrambles, close losses, unexpected blunders, and those are all a part of the experience. You need to find the best way of dealing with these, and addressing them is not always the easiest thing.
One of the great things about playing chess with a team is that everyone gets to highlight their skillset. What also happens is that leaders emerge naturally, some players will mentor others, and experienced competitors will teach everyone how to stay calm and improve their gameplay.
Yes, it does happen more often than you realize. When students are a part of a team, they are keen to take more risks, and they are continually pushing the limits to become the best they can be. Entering such a tournament with other players by your side feels very fulfilling, and it can provide some amazing benefits in the long term.
With a team, you can easily analyze former matches and see what went wrong. Maybe there was a bad opening, you had bad tactics that need to be improved upon and so on. The more eyes you have on a game analysis, the easier it will be to identify mistakes. So it makes sense to have a team by your side which is there to help you improve.
One of the things that appear when you work within a team is that you become more accountable. And that certainly happens in chess. You have people to respond to and they will keep you accountable as much as possible. That alone can help guide you towards becoming a better player.
Attending these chess events was a highlight for our academy in 2025, and we are already looking forward to new events in 2026. It’s exciting to bring our players to these events, because it helps with their overall development. Plus, they get to encounter like-minded people and establish friendships that could last for a very long time. Our academy is always looking forward to new chess-related events, and if you want to stay updated with us, we recommend following our Instagram page today!
