A Historic Weekend of Chess

Over the Fourth of July weekend, the Riverside Convention Center became the home of one of Southern California’s premier chess events as 250 players and more than 500 attendees gathered for the 2026 Pacific Southwest Open, hosted by Day & Knight Chess Club. Featuring a $15,000 guaranteed prize fund across six championship sections, the event marked the organization’s first major championship tournament hosted in partnership with the Southern California Chess Federation (SCCF). Players of all ages and skill levels came together to compete, learn, and celebrate the game of chess.

Creating a First-Class Experience

From the moment players arrived, the goal was to provide a professional and welcoming experience. Friendly volunteers greeted participants during check-in while every player received a personalized welcome packet containing a badge, lanyard, notation sheets, tournament schedule, venue map, restaurant recommendations, brochures, and other helpful information. Throughout the weekend, spacious playing halls, comfortable analysis areas, complimentary coffee, refreshments, snack and beverage tickets, and attentive hospitality helped create an enjoyable environment for competitors, families, and spectators alike.

Championship Competition & Side Events

Inside the tournament halls, competitors battled across six championship sections on custom blue Pacific Southwest Open boards with weighted pieces under the supervision of an outstanding team of Tournament Directors. Between rounds, players analyzed games, met fellow competitors, and prepared for their next challenge. Beyond the tournament games, attendees enjoyed a variety of side events and activities, including a special Grandmaster Kirk Gazarian lecture, the exciting Fourth of July Blitz Tournament, giant outdoor chess, vendor booths, the tournament gift shop, and opportunities to connect with the growing Southern California chess community.

Celebrating the Chess Community

The Pacific Southwest Open was about much more than trophies and rating points—it was a celebration of the chess community. Tournament shirts, commemorative board giveaways, professional event branding, photography, the awards ceremony, and the Sunday Grand Raffle helped create lasting memories for players and families alike. Day & Knight Chess Club extends its sincere appreciation to the Southern California Chess Federation, Tournament Directors, volunteers, vendors, photographers, Riverside Convention Center staff, players, families, and supporters whose dedication made this championship possible.
